So What's Up With the Wooden Shoe?
We've been busy little radicals lately, working toward the biggest news we've had in a fairly long time. You might have heard the speculation and the rumors, but here it is: the Wooden Shoe Books is moving. We're relocating the store from our beloved location, 508 S. 5th Street, to a bigger, better spot at 704 South Street. We're really excited about this move, and we hope others are just as enthused. To make this move happen, we have been fundraising like the dickens. We are holding raffles and garage sales, among other neat ideas, but we still have a ways to go until we can make this happen. On October 2, we're having a dance party at the new location. There will be fun and excitement filling the new space, starting it off with a warm feeling. On October 3, there will be a full day of workshops, including History of the Wooden Shoe, Bicycle Repair, Organizing 101, "Know Your Rights," silk screening/printmaking and more. That evening there will be a discussion on Sustaining Radical/Anti-capitalist Projects Beyond the Economic Crisis. And that night we will have live music and poetry at the new location. Grand opening of the new Shoe will be on October 11. Everyone is welcome to marvel at our new location. We're excited, you're excited. It will be great
But until then, here are some events we will have at our current location. On August 13 (from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.), we will have Irish Rebel History, as told by our very own James Generic. On Aug. 15 (from 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.) there will be some Pittsburgh locals coming down to talk about the G-20, and what they're doing to organize a protest against it. On Aug. 19 (from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.), Canticle of Idols: A Poetry Night with Raina J. Leon. And on Aug. 27, we will have a Book Club Discussion on "The Dispossessed" by Ursula K. Le Guin. The discussion is open to anyone who has read the novel and would like to hear about it and talk about it with others.
To learn about more events, please do stop by our web site at or just come by the store and take a look at our fliers.
That's about it for what's been going on around the Shoe. We hope everyone is as happy about our move as we are, and hope to see you all at our grand opening.
